Interview with
San Diego Padres Owner John Moores
June, 2001
Stricker: Did you want to own a baseball team when you were a kid?
Moores: : No. I wanted to play baseball. I wanted to be a baseball player, a football player and a basketball player. I never really thought I could own something. I think it would be better to be a baseball player than to be a baseball team owner.

Stricker: What was your favorite book when you were a kid?
Moores: I think I liked Robin Hood a lot.

Stricker: What is your favorite book now?
Moores: Catch 22 by Joseph Heller.

Stricker: What is your favorite website?
Moores: : I guess I had better say www.mlb.com, major league baseball.com

Stricker: What one thing do you think makes you successful?
Moores: Thatís a good question. I guess itís because I donít think Iím too smart. I know thereís a lot of people smarter than I am.

Stricker: Did you play a lot of sports when you were a kid?
Moores: Yes. I played a little baseball, a little football, a little basketball, and I was on the track team when I was in high school and college.

Stricker: Whatís the best thing about owning the Padres?
Moores: Itís the opportunity to understand how baseball teams really work. And the chance to meet the players.

Stricker: Who is your favorite Padre?
Moores: There are a lot of nice guys that play baseball, but everybody knows the favorite guy has got to be Tony Gwynn.

Stricker: Do people ask you for tickets all the time?
Moores: Yes they do. But thatís ok.

Stricker: Do you go to all the Padres games?
Moores: I see almost 100% of the home games, and I see maybe 15-20 games a year on the road. Iíll see maybe 100 baseball games in a season.

Stricker: When do you think the new ballpark will be ready?
Moores: I am hoping it will be ready in April 2004. So we have two seasons left to play here. I am optimistic it will be ready by then.
