Interview with
San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy
May, 2001
Stricker: Did you want to be a public figure when you were a kid?
Murphy: Well, I wanted to be a sports figure, a baseball player or basketball player. But I wasn't good enough for that.

Stricker: Did you play Little League?
Murphy: Yes I played Little League and Pony League. I even made the All Star Team when I was 12.

Stricker: Who is your favorite Padre?
Murphy: I would say Trevor Hoffman because of his self-discipline.

Stricker: What is the best part about being mayor?
Murphy: As mayor you have the ability to change things in the community, and that makes it worthwhile.

Stricker: What is the worst part?
Murphy: Working 80-90 hours a week. I'm so busy I don't have much time with my family.

Stricker: What is your favorite book?
Murphy: I liked "The Firm" by John Grishom. Being a lawyer I could relate to the characters.

Stricker: What was your favorite book when you were a kid?
Murphy: "The Little Engine That Could" about the train that worked harder than all the other trains.
